Description:

  • Offered here is a vintage 1970 Framus 07301 Billy Lorento, made in Germany. This is a particularly interesting and increasingly difficult-to-find Framus semi-hollow from the company’s late-1960s/early-1970s period. The guitar dates to February 1970, based on the original Framus headstock stamp 05895-70-B. Framus’ dating system uses the two-digit year followed by a letter indicating the production month, making “70 B” February 1970.

The 07301 was one of the later instruments to carry the Billy Lorento name. Billy Lorento was the stage name of German guitarist and pickup/electronics designer Willi Lorenz Stich, who later became famous in the United States as Bill Lawrence. Framus continued the Billy Lorento line into the 1970s, with the 07301 being one of the final semi-acoustic models bearing the name.

  • One of the distinctive features of this model is the fully closed semi-hollow body — there are no traditional F-holes or painted/faux F-holes. It has the look and resonance of a vintage German thinline/semi-acoustic while retaining a very distinctive Framus design. The combination of the thin arched body, ebony fingerboard, two single-coil pickups, three-control layout and Framus Bigsby-style vibrato gives this guitar a very different character from the more common Gibson-style semi-hollows of the period.

This is also an interesting piece of the Billy Lorento/Bill Lawrence story. Lorento worked closely with Framus beginning in the 1950s and was involved in pickup and electronics development before eventually moving to the United States and becoming known as Bill Lawrence.
